The Philadelphia Cricket Club Wissahickon Militia Hill and St Martins Golf Courses
The first time you fly you are struck by how different everything looks from the air. Viewed from above, architectural and landscape design elements come into focus in ways impossible to visualize from the ground. Looking down on golf courses, from above, offers true revelations about the architects, hundred of intentions, that created the features and challenges presented to the golfer. I’d often flown over the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon, Militia Hill and St. Martin’s golf courses on the way back to Wings Field from aerial photo missions and was fascinated by how varied the Club’s three golf courses, designed in three different centuries, appeared from the air. In the Summer of 2010 Gib Carpenter and I decided to do an aerial survey in close detail to explore, from above, every design intricacy of the Wissahickon, Militia Hill and St. Martin’s golf courses. In order to do this we wanted wide angle aerial images showing the Wissahickon and Militia Hill golf courses as a whole in relation to each other and geography they occupy. To capture the character of each individual hole of golf on the three courses we decided we needed an oblique aerial image looking down each hole on the three golf courses, with the tee boxes in the foreground fairways at center and greens in the background. We also ended up with some great aerial images showing the Club’s clubhouses and other facilities. The best way to present the results from this project was in the form of a coffee table book but we needed contributors who could describe in detail the intricacies of these golf courses, so we contacted the designer of the Militia Hill golf course, Dr. Michael Hurdzan who agreed to write a foreword explaining the progression of style in golf course design and the prevailing theories in golf course design popular in the three very different eras when the St. Martin’s, Wissahickon and Militia Hill golf courses were constructed. To put each individual hole in perspective and guide the reader through a round on each golf course, Jim Smith Jr. Director of Golf at the Club wrote a commentary for each hole to highlight each holes character and challenges. The book is Titled: Philadelphia Cricket Club and is available in a 7â€x7†soft cover edition and a 12â€x12†full size coffee table book edition, from Blurb.com http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2291313
